YIAVHA Calls for Action on International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism Jos, Nigeria – February 12, 2025

The Youth Initiative Against Violence and Human Rights Abuse (YIAVHA), through it’s Executive Director, Jacob Choji Pwakim, has issued a strong call to action on the International Day for the “Prevention of Violent Extremism as and When Conducive to Terrorism”.

In a press statement issued on 12 February 2025, the Youth-led organisation urged governments, policymakers, and stakeholders to prioritize innovative, community-driven approaches to prevention and the provision of intentional funding support to intensify early intervention.

In the statement, Pwakim emphasized the need to move beyond reactive responses and adopt non-kinetic strategies that are timely and contextually relevant. He stressed that prevention must begin with domestic funding, making it a policy priority at all levels of governance to ensure sustained support for grassroots solutions.

He further highlighted the crucial role of women, youth, and children, stating that those most affected by violent extremism should be at the forefront of transformative efforts.

“Their voices are not just relevant in leading transformation; they are essential to building lasting peace,” Pwakim stated.

As the world marks this important day, YIAVHA is calling on all stakeholders to act decisively:

Fund prevention initiatives to tackle extremism at its roots.

Prioritize inclusion by ensuring marginalized voices shape policies and programs.

Empower local changemakers to drive sustainable solutions.

The call comes at a time when violent extremism remains a pressing global challenge, demanding urgent, coordinated action that accommodates innovation, local investment, and empowerment of women, children, and youth.
