YIAVHA spearheaded a project funded by Pharos Obersavatory France, JDPC Jos, and IMC Kaduna, aimed at safeguarding the rights of victims affected by violent conflicts between Farmers and Herders in Riyom and Barkin Ladi LGAs, regardless of their religion, culture, or ethnicity. Implemented from 2017 to 2018, the project targeted 8 secondary schools and 8 communities in Plateau State, Nigeria. Key activities included peace education initiatives, establishment of peace clubs, youth inter-community dialogues, trauma awareness and resilience training, and a youth peace camp and radio program. Directly impacting 770 individuals (495 males and 275 females), the project provided a platform for dialogue among farmers and herders, particularly focusing on engaging young people. Additionally, it raised awareness about trauma and human rights issues, offering support mechanisms for affected community members.
At the youth camp based on predominance of narratives that the Muslims in the state were on a Jihad mission, the Christian participants were given an expose to the writings of the Quran which has over the years been misinterpreted and used to form the bases to justify Christian-Muslim conflicts in the state. This new understanding was overwhelming to many and they showed physical excitement from the new understanding.
